🌻 Synopsis

rack-openid2 wraps ruby-openid2 in Rack middleware. An application requests authentication with a 401 Unauthorized response and an OpenID WWW-Authenticate header; after the provider callback, the middleware verifies the response and places it in env["rack.openid.response"].

The gem also provides Rack::OpenID::SimpleAuth for applications that need to protect a route for one fixed OpenID identifier. It supports OpenID 1.x/2.0, not OpenID Connect (OIDC).

Compatibility

Compatible with MRI Ruby 2.7.0+, and concordant releases of JRuby, and TruffleRuby. CI workflows and Appraisals are generated for MRI Ruby 2.7.0+. This test floor is configured by ruby.test_minimum in .kettle-jem.yml and may be higher than the gem’s runtime compatibility floor when legacy Rubies are not practical for the current toolchain.

Install the gem and add to the application’s Gemfile by executing:

If bundler is not being used to manage dependencies, install the gem by executing:

gem install rack-openid2

⚙️ Configuration

Place session middleware before Rack::OpenID; the middleware raises when no rack.session is available. Supply an OpenID::Store as the optional second argument when associations and nonces must survive process restarts:

Without an explicit store, Rack::OpenID uses OpenID::Store::Memory, which is appropriate only for a single long-running process. For SimpleAuth, provide the identifier to validate; it installs Rack::OpenID automatically but still requires session middleware.

🔧 Basic Usage

You trigger an OpenID request similar to HTTP authentication. From your app, return a “401 Unauthorized” and a “WWW-Authenticate” header with the identifier you would like to validate.

On competition, the OpenID response is automatically verified and assigned to env["rack.openid.response"].

This library follows for its public API where practical. For most applications, prefer the Pessimistic Version Constraint with two digits of precision.

For example:

spec.add_dependency("rack-openid2", "~> 2.0")
